What's the real cost of your feeding program?

Understanding the true daily costs of your horse’s diet starts by taking stock of the quality and nutritional value provided by the three main components of your horse’s feeding program.

Why a cheaper feed

May not save you money

1. All feeds are not created equal
For an accurate price comparison, calculate the cost per pound — the price of the bag divided by the number of pounds included.

2. Recommended feeding rates vary
The minimum amount of feed needed to provide the required daily vitamins and minerals varies considerably from feed to feed. So even with a lower per pound price, feeds with higher daily required feeding rates end up costing you more.

3. Compensating with supplements
Are you filling gaps in your feed with supplements? Providing a high-quality, fortified feed can eliminate the need for costly add-ons.

Testimonial

Lower cost feeds don’t compare

We’ve been buying Triple Crown Complete for several years for my daughter’s OTTB and AQHA show horses. They were always in good shape. Last year she stopped showing — and Triple Crown Complete increased to over $32 a bag. I found it hard to justify the price, so I found a mill in the Southern region with a feed that seemed comparable — Quality Blend feeds, Performance label. Not a complete substitute, but it was ok. I figured it will be fine because the “boys” as we call them, weren’t in showing season. I was more excited that it was $11 cheaper a bag.

After I made the switch [stopped feeding Triple Crown], both horses started to drop weight.
It was over the winter, but by spring I had to increase the feed and the AQHA was looking ok but the OTTB was not looking so great. So, I said let’s find another comparable feed that is not as expensive as TCC but might be more than Quality Blend. After researching, we went to Tribute® Kalm Ultra® at $26 a bag.

After 70 days on the Kalm Ultra® the AQHA looked the same and the OTTB looked worse. I didn’t know what to do.
Started ruling out all the usual issues and came across an article on Kcals and their importance for hard keepers. It’s like a light bulb went off in my head. I checked the Triple Crown Complete Kcals — 1700 per pound. The Kalm Ultra® was 1540. Bingo! That was it! That is a difference of 160 Kcals per pound between the two. My OTTB was missing a total of 1,920 kcals a day! Poor boy! No wonder he was losing weight.

We made the switch back to TC Complete. In a quick 3-week time period the OTTB looks so much better and has gained weight! He has a way to go but will get there. Even the AQHA looks better. Maybe for some breeds Kcals are not so much a deal breaker, but for those super hard keepers the Kcals make the difference.

I just wanted to tell you that we will not switch again from Triple Crown feed.
Thank you and kindest regards,
Cheri P.
